Finding a Sturdy Screen Door That Allows Your Cats to Come in and Out

Wyatt Patterson

Security doors are great to keep out unwanted intruders, but many pet owners also want their pets to be able to come in and out by themselves, without the owners needing to open and shut the door all day long. It is important to choose the right model of security screen door if you have pets.

Cat door access

One of the easiest options for letting cats in and out is some sort of cat flap or door. This can obviously cause the door to be less secure, so it is important to get one that does not compromise the integrity of the door. If you know that you need a cat flap, it is a good idea to speak to your security door installation company early in the process so that they can recommend a model which has a cat flap integrated into the door.

You also need to make sure that the opening mechanism for the door is secure in order to make sure that the door only lets in your animal and not other animals. Many doors have some sort of communication between the cat and door, such as magnet or RFID lockets on the cat's collar, which ensure that only cats with the correct collar can open the door.

Sturdy grills

Cat claws tend to be sharp, and they often enjoy raking their claws on textured surfaces such as screen door grills. Other cats who like to see the world from a higher angle may take to climbing the grill, which can cause the top of the security door to bear a lot more weight than it may have to in a home without cats! That can be an issue with larger cats such as Maine Coons, especially, as they can be quite heavy.

If you have cats, it is a good idea to look for a sturdy grill that is resistant to scratching. Not only does scratching look bad, but it can also affect the overall stability and rust resistance of some doors, which can lead to corrosion and even weakness over time.

Many security grills can be coated with a slippery coating that discourages both scratching and climbing.

If you are looking for a sturdy security screen that is suitable for cats, it is a good idea to talk to your security company about specialist products. These can help to ensure that your security screen looks good, offers maximum security and is convenient for your cat to come and go.

About Me
Having a yard for the kids to play in

I knew that the moment we bought a house with a decent yard I'd be ready to start having kids. I loved playing outside as a kid and since we've been in this house I think the kids spend nearly as much time outside as they do outside. That lawn has seen my babies crawl, my toddlers start walkings, the kids kicking balls around and playing chasey all afternoon. Keeping the lawn soft and green is so important to me as it let's us spend all that time outside. I'm always looking for ways to make it feel and look soft and green.
